In day 6 of 7 easy ways to detox without having to detox, I’m featuring one of my favourite desserts – 2 minute healthy chocolate mousse.
Looking for a chocolate fix was rarely high on my agenda. Back in the day I was always more of a ‘sweets’ girl. We used to go to the train station milk bar and stock up on peach sour straps and red clouds and pineapples. I moved onto chocolate for a bit, dabbling with Haigh’s or good old Mars Bars and Tee Vee Snacks but it was never truly my thing. That is until I was introduced to the world of Cacao.
It’s now part of my weekly ritual and I add it to smoothies for breakfast (yes you can eat chocolate for breakfast) and it stars in a lot of my desserts/baking. I also make a mean hot chocolate, which I’ve talked about before. And use it in my custom made chocolate products which you can order here.
Cacao is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. This is BEFORE it has been highly processed by extreme heat, added sugars, milk, preservatives etc. Its seeds are used to make what we know – cocoa powder and chocolate.
Pronounced ka-kow. It’s real name Theobroma cacao means food of the gods.
Cacao is a guilt free treat with many many benefits. Cacao has been known to help:
- Muscle relaxation
- Relieving stress
- Lowering blood pressure
- Lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the body
- Reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases
- Enhancing the immune system and stopping the effects of free radical damage
- Uplift the mood and increase focus
- Help contribute to the formation of strong bones
- Strengthening nails, shiny hair and a healthy liver and pancreas
Cacao has the highest antioxidant value of all the natural foods in the world. Nearly twice the antioxidant content of red wine and three times the antioxidant content of green tea. And four times the antioxidants of traditional cacao powder. It really is a superfood but it’s readily available. Cacao can be purchased from good supermarkets or health food stores.
Cacao comes in the form of powder, nibs (think choc chips) and butter (beans are pulverised to release oil and turned into butter).
If you’re wondering what Cacao tastes like. Yes, it is chocolate but think of a very very dark 80% chocolate. I’m going to warn you now, this recipe is strong. But it’s perfectly sweet with lashings of coconut and banana. It’s such a versatile ingredient and that is what I love about it.
Mousse is an old favourite with everyone. You could make this for dinner guests, they would fall in love with its rich taste and be none the wiser that it’s actually doing their body some good.
This recipe is no fuss. Change it as you wish. There are a crazy number of mousse recipes around and that makes it a favourite for me, you can completely tailor it to you. I’m going to warn you now, this recipe is strong in flavour. But best of all its a guilt free dessert with a whole lot of nutritional benefit.
2 minute chocolate mousse
- 1/3 cup raw cacao
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 avocado
- 4 tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup (I don’t like things too sweet, so add more if you need to)
- 4 tablespoons coconut cream
- 2 tablespoons dried coconut
- 1 teaspoon vanilla powder
- OPTIONAL: 1 teaspoon cinnamon, a sprinkle of cayenne pepper
- TOPPING: banana, raspberries, coconut, cacao nibs, lightly roasted nuts
- Add all ingredients to blender
- Blend on high for 30 seconds
