A simple healthy green smoothie recipe


I’ve been making this simple healthy green smoothie recipe all week for BJ. He’s teething and not that keen on food right now. This healthy smoothie combination helps to cool and soothe his gums, while providing him at least one serving of vegetables for the day.

It’d be easy to fill him up with fruit and yoghurt which I have no problem in doing but when his appetite is low for longer than a day, I’ll always take the opportunity to add in some veggies any way I can. So I’ve been making this green smoothie to boost his greens intake, soothe his sore gums and cool off from the heat.

Look I’m no hardcore green smoothie maker. I love fruit and prefer to chew my veggies. I usually use smoothies as a way to get me through the afternoon without snacking, reaching for coffee, chocolate or whatever else. I’m chalking this down to being a mum and having lived 3 full days by 3pm.

So this smoothie is still on the very fruitty side. I’ve heard of people adding steamed sweet potato, carrot, beetroot and zucchini. I haven’t ever tried it and I’m not that interested right now, maybe one day I will. There’s also the usual suspects of cucumber, leafy greens, celery, avocado.

My winning smoothie formula

No matter if it’s all fruit or a mix of fruit and veggie, I usually keep these ratio’s as close as I can. This would be a good time to mention, if you reduce the liquid to 1/4 of a cup, you have yourself a quick and healthy sorbet.

  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups fruit and/or veggies I usually use frozen, so I don’t need to bother with ice to cool it down. The cup measurement is really loose. I use 1 1/2 cups if I’m adding greens.

  • 1/2 – 1 banana

  • If making a greenie: 2 silverbeet leaves and 2 cos lettuce leaves

  • A handful of nuts or seeds, coconut

  • 1 cup water or nut milk, coconut milk, coconut water

  • Optional: spirulina (incredibly high in iron, great for babies and their crazy high iron requirements), maca, camu camu.

As a side note which has nothing to do with this ‘winning smoothie formula’ I’ve just listed. I’ve been loving the blend of 1 medium sized ruby grapefruit and 1 cup of frozen strawberries. Oh my.

A simple healthy green smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1/2 - 2 cups fruit I like frozen mango and pineapple
  • 1 banana
  • 2 silverbeet leaves and 2 cos lettuce leaves
  • A handful of almonds
  • 1 cup water
  • 1

Instructions

  • ow everything in your blend and blend on high for 1 minute.
  • TASTE TEST. If adding greens is new for you or you have a sweeter tooth, you may need to adjust the flavours by adding more fruit.
  • Serve in jars to drink or in bowls to scoop with some coconut yoghurt.
  • I pop BJ in his learning tower, he helps me make it, sees everything that goes in (usually stealing silverbeet along the way). I serve his in a bowl with a spoon, the bib gets a lot of it but it becomes a fun game for him scooping the smoothie out of his bib too.
