When life gives you lemons

You know the old saying… when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Well I’ve shaken things up here at LLL.

When life gives you lemons, make lemon water. Every morning. Your body will thank you.

Our dear friend the lemon is an oval ball of tart, fragrant, freshness. They are available most of the year round but are at the peak of their season here in Sydney. On my weekend travels, I have managed to score a few bags of lemons.

WOOHOO! I’m not talking shop bought produce. I’m talkin’ the real deal ‘picked fresh from a tree that morning’ type of lemon. Nothing beats that.

On return to Sydney, they’ve taken pride place in my fruit bowl creating a towering yellow stack. While I don’t yet have a lemon tree in my backyard – it’s on the to do list, along with getting a backyard and some chickens.

But when I have a lemon I’ll add it to everything and anything: salad dressing, pasta sauce, sorbet and the list goes on. I’m even known for carrying lemons around in my bag, you know, just in case.

I would have to say my number 1 favourite past time with the exciting fruit is a big glass of warm lemon water.

Its such a great way to wake up and your body will thank you.

5 reasons to drink lemon water

  1. Detoxifying
Lemons so good at helping flush out unwanted toxins and materials from the body.

  2. Flu fighting
It packs a large punch of vitamin C, which is great for this time of the year. For other tips on kicking the flu, read about the benefits of juicing here.

  3. Improves digestion
Drinking a lemon water brew first thing in the morning is a nice wake up call for your digestive system. It also helps to get things moving in a gentle way before you glug down your breakfast or morning coffee.

  4. Balance
Maintaining balanced pH levels in the body is so important. When the body is too acidic, it promotes disease and sickness. Lemons are one of the most alkaline foods around.

  5. Promotes weight loss
When the bodies pH levels are balanced (and more alkaline) it’s easier to shed those kg’s too…..and because it’s Thursday, here’s one more for good luck.

  6. All round awesome
Lemons do wonders for clearer skin, concentration, anti-aging and improving energy. In technical terms they are high in Potassium which creates more red blood cells and reduces free radicals.

So what to do next?

  1. Find some lemons.

  2. Chop in half a squeeze the juice out.
Or thinly slice and add straight to your water bottle (this is the prettier version and you will spread lemon envy wherever you go).

  3. Add warm water.

  4. Drink at your preferred speed. First thing in the morning is the best, but feel free to continue drinking throughout the day.

  5. Share this post with your friends.
